Here’s a quick recap of what’s happening in the Seventh Council District this week:
Cooling Our Streets

This week, I joined the Department of Sanitation to install the first cool pavement in the 7th District at Lopez Canyon Environmental Education Center in Sylmar. The cool coating reflects the sun’s heat, rather than having the heat absorbed by the surface, and reduces the temperature by nearly 10 degrees. Coming this June, we’re installing a second cool pavement in North Hills near Lassen Elementary School. High temperatures and climate change are real issues in the Northeast Valley and we must continue to find innovative solutions.
Making Our Schools Safer
I’m happy to announce that we’ve installed new lighting at a number of our local schools to help deter crime, dumping, tagging, and other illicit activities. The schools that received new lighting include: Pinewood Elementary School, Sunland Elementary School, Mountain View Elementary School, Plainview Academic Charter Academy, Sylmar Charter High School, Hubbard Street Elementary, Evergreen High School, and Osceola Elementary School. In addition, my office is meeting with local public schools throughout the 7th District, in partnership with the City Attorney’s office and Department of Water & Power, to implement the Neighborhood School Safety Program.
Celebrating Young Athletes
Play ball! This week, I joined hundreds of young athletes at the Little League Opening Day celebration at Ritchie Valens Recreation Park, a Dodgers Dreamfield. The first pitch was thrown by retired Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Al Downing. We also welcomed Richard Kravitz, the new Park Director for Ritchie Valens Recreation Park. I’m wishing all of the young athletes, coaches, and volunteers a great season.
Supporting Young Women in STEM

Go Tigers! Congratulations to the San Fernando High School DIY “Do-It-Yourself” Girls for a successful end-of-year project showcase. These young women were tasked with tackling issues, like indoor air quality in low income communities, using their experience in science, engineering, technology, and mathematics (STEM). These young women have very bright futures, and I’m proud of the STEM talent in the Northeast San Fernando Valley.

Last Sunday, we celebrated Mother’s Day at Pacoima City Hall with live music, dancing, and food. Thank you Banda La Pegadora de Ruben Pelayo for an incredible performance. Also, many thanks to Eduardo Gonzalez of Taquito Y Mas for generously donating food and refreshments for the celebration, and to Pacoima Beautiful for help organizing the event.
